It took Apple long enough, but everything it previewed in 2024 during the WWDC keynote is about to come true. As soon as Beta 1 was released, developers were able to explore the new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features introduced by the company in early June. Among the optimized technologies, iOS 27 users get several standard apps with Apple Intelligence support, and old but familiar features like Visual Intelligence, Writing Tools, and Image Playground have all been revamped.
While Apple has worked hard to bring these features to iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro users, it’s its partnership with Google and custom Gemini models that are finally boosting the company’s AI efforts. Apple says most of these features work locally on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but even those that require a connection to a cloud have a layer of protection thanks to Private Cloud Compute, which ensures that user information remains anonymous and no profiles are created to track them.
Customers with an iPhone 15 Pro, iPad with M1 or A17 Pro, and Macs with M1 or A18 Pro chips or newer will be able to take full advantage of the all-new Apple Intelligence features. That said, it’s important to note that some functions are still limited to English, and even once iOS 27 is released, most of these functions will remain in beta.
Siri AI
Following its design overhaul with iOS 18, Apple is redesigning Siri again. This time, the personal assistant actually achieves what the company always envisioned. In addition to a new user interface that appears from Dynamic Island, this new Siri can understand context and exploit your personal information. For example, you can ask the personal assistant to help you find “that link” that “a friend” sent you a few weeks ago about a new book coming out.
In addition to this, Siri can now act in applications and gain knowledge about the world. A perfect example of combined knowledge is asking Siri to find photos from when you were on Taylor Swift’s The Eras tour, then asking the personal assistant what the surprise songs were and playing them all in a new playlist. The new Siri also brings a feature that the personal assistant has never had before: a dedicated app.
With the new Siri app, users can start, continue, or view a conversation. In this way, the personal assistant is similar to better-known AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, but without a profile of your information being created so you can target you with ads. What’s more interesting is that on iPad and Mac, Siri AI is part of Spotlight, which helps users get answers to questions on the computer, but also on the Internet.
The Photos app has powerful AI tools
Apple is redesigning the Photos app with every other software update. This time, however, the company has kept the same look, but added three main editing tools that will significantly improve the way users interact with their photos. When you try to edit a photo in iOS 27, Apple will display a new “Tools” tab with three features: Clean Up, Expand, and Crop.
Apple introduced Clean Up with iOS 18, but said at the time that the feature was intended to remove certain objects from the image without changing its overall appearance. For example, while Samsung’s AI could recreate half of your face, even if it was covered by an object, Apple’s Clean Up tool wouldn’t try to guess what the other part of your face looks like. With the new models, the company’s Clean Up tool is much better and can remove more delicate objects from a shot.
With the Develop feature, let’s say you took a photo in portrait mode, but now you’d love it in landscape mode. This feature adds more background to the photo, making it look exactly how you want it. Finally, Apple created a new Reframe feature, allowing you to change the angle of the photo using Vision Pro’s spatial algorithms. During the keynote, Apple described this feature as if the user goes back in time to adjust the shot.
Safari, passwords, home and shortcuts
Many apps in iOS 27 are now deeply integrated with Apple Intelligence. Safari, for example, finally has smart tabs that organize themselves according to their topics; There’s also a “Notify Me” feature, which tracks changes in a web page so you can get information when a product you want is back in stock, and the browser also has a feature that lets you create an extension using AI. You tell Apple Intelligence what you need from this page, and the extension can be created just like that.
For the Passwords app, it can finally do something about all those compromised passwords you never updated. Now AI can log into your account, change the password, and then update the code in the app. For those who use the Home app to manage security cameras, it now allows recording of 4K footage, intelligently saves clips you might be interested in, and provides real-time updates about someone moving through your home. Still, the app has become smart enough to not spam you with multiple notifications of the same thing.
Apple is finally making the biggest change to the Shortcuts app, making it accessible to everyone. Previously, users had to follow a few steps to create a custom shortcut. Even though the app has always been powerful, not everyone has figured out how to navigate it. Now, users just need to tell the app what they need and Apple Intelligence will create the shortcut for them.
Powerful visual intelligence
Visual Intelligence was one of the key Apple Intelligence features introduced with iOS 18. The feature has evolved over the past few years with capabilities similar to Google’s Circle to Search, allowing users to translate a screenshot of real-world information, add an event to the calendar, and much more. With iOS 27, Visual Intelligence expands to other Apple devices like iPad, Mac and Vision Pro; iPhone users can now enjoy this with the all-new Siri, which can take action for users.
For example, if you’re reviewing a festival lineup, Visual Intelligence can create multiple calendar events for you and Siri can help you select only the ones you actually want to attend. Another interesting possibility that Apple highlighted during the WWDC 2026 keynote is the ability to easily split a bill. Basically, once checked, users just need to point at Visual Intelligence and Siri will display all the menu items. Mark which ones you had, then use Apple Pay Cash to transfer the amount to a friend, or just tell the waiter how much you owe. That said, visual intelligence is finally becoming much more useful thanks to Siri, who understands contexts and can read the world around you.
All-new Writing Tools and Image Playground features
Apple is also boosting OG Apple Intelligence features through its partnership with Google. Now the functions of Writing Tools and Image Playground are much better with updated algorithms. Writing tools now exist everywhere in the system and users can activate them with Siri to help them write anything from scratch. Among examples, Apple says users can refine something they’ve written, ask the personal assistant to make specific changes to certain paragraphs, and much more.
Perhaps the best part about writing tools in iOS 27 is that Apple says Siri can match your tone in certain apps. So if you need help sending a friend happy birthday, Siri will adopt the tone of your previous messages. If you’re writing an email to your boss, the message will be much more formal, use bullet points (if that’s something you always do with them), and other specific writing styles you might have.
For Image Playground, Apple now allows the app to create realistic images, so users can take advantage of the Photos app, improved Genmoji creation, and even enjoy other styles that weren’t previously available without the help of ChatGPT. iOS 27, like other software updates, is expected to be released later this fall, with a public beta planned for July.
