Mini-LED TVs are, as the name suggests, panels with many smaller LED lights rather than the larger ones on a standard LED panel. With this advanced backlight, they can achieve higher maximum brightness, deeper blacks and even more vivid images. Samsung’s latest lineup of Mini-LED TVs has an emphasis on value, which could make these bright displays seem “cheap” compared to other innovative panels on the market today. With that in mind, how long can you actually expect your Mini-LED TV to last?
According to Samsung, the standard lifespan of LEDs is 100,000 hours. This equates to over 11 years of continuous use. RTINGS’ expert testers verified (via Tom’s Hardware) that most TVs can last more than 10,000 hours, even under intense conditions, with Mini-LED panels performing particularly well in exhaustive experiments. Obviously, Mini-LED panels have built-in longevity and are not necessarily low quality, even at bargain prices. And even if a small diode stops working, it will be barely noticeable among the group of many adjacent diodes that are still glowing.
Do Mini LED TVs last longer than OLED?
If you’re looking for a modern TV, mini-LED and OLED will likely be at the top of your list. Users claim that OLED TVs are actually reliable. If you are looking for a durable panel, a Mini-LED is best. RTINGs’ test found that OLED panels can also last more than 10,000 hours under the most intense conditions, but they are also more likely to burn out. Even though a Mini-LED display is brighter than its OLED equivalent, it will likely last at least as long and is less likely to suffer visible damage.
You might expect a brighter Mini-LED TV to use more power or generate more heat, creating more risk of pixel damage or burnout. But since a Mini-LED TV’s brightness comes from its large number of diodes (over 20,000 in the case of the TCL X11L Mini-LED), the brightness and heat are actually distributed evenly across a larger number of respective diodes. This means that these TVs actually require a lower, cooler electrical current. As a result, there is less thermal stress on the entire panel, which would otherwise cause various components to degrade over time.
Of course, there are reasons why you might choose an OLED panel when deciding between the more advanced TVs. There are particular disadvantages of Mini-LED TVs that you should be aware of before simply choosing one for its longevity. Overall, though, you can expect your Mini-LED TV to last 10 to 15 years, or even longer, if you treat it well.
