Final Fantasy Resonance is the first game in the series to use the popular modern-retro art style.
Square Enix has spent the last few years giving all kinds of games the sumptuous HD-2D treatment, from reimagined classic titles to brand new franchises. But for some reason, this is only just beginning in Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy Resonance can proudly call itself the first HD-2D Final Fantasy game, and it’s not a remake like the recent Dragon Quest, but rather a new(ish) series entry based on the mobile game’s first story arc Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. “Far from being a simple direct port, it has been refined and completely rebuilt to become a full-fledged, console-quality RPG experience,” Square Enix wrote in a press release.
The publisher promises that Resonance will be a celebration of the classic and modern eras of Final Fantasy, showcasing all the hallmarks of the series. Expect turn-based combat with a contemporary twist, airships, plenty of chocobos, and appearances like Cloud Strife and Final Fantasy XIt’s Tidus.
That brilliant HD pixel art is really the big draw here, and if you were hoping for Final Fantasy’s answer to the Octopath Traveler series, this might just be it. Final Fantasy Resonance launch October 22, 2026 on PlayStation 5, PC, Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S
