iOS 27 includes a completely redesigned Genmoji creation experience. There’s an updated interface that supports describing an emoji you want to create, with options to start from an existing emoji, choose an image from Photos, or select a person.
After uploading an image or using a text phrase to create a Genmoji, there is now a “Describe Edit” interface to update what you’ve already created. You can browse designs and edit specific elements of a Genmoji, changing colors and objects.
Apple’s AI is smarter than before and is able to successfully make iterative updates for better customization of the Genmoji. Each change uses the old database rather than regenerating a new Genmoji on each request. With a series of queries, it is possible to create a complex, multi-element Genmoji. In addition to describing the changes, you can also add additional emoji and the interface offers suggestions on what to do next.
Genmoji’s output is also more consistent and Genmoji looks more like real emoji with a cartoonish 3D style by default. There is now an option to change the style, so if you don’t want the cartoonish look, you can request something else like a drawing or sketch.
Generating a Genmoji doesn’t take as long and appears to be less system intensive with less battery drain.
Apple also overhauled Image Playground in iOS 27, and Image Playground and Genmoji use updated Apple Foundation templates. Image Playground now supports generating photorealistic images and adding AI elements only to certain parts of photos.
