According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, a new Google Play Store version 51.4.19 includes code strings suggesting Google may add a feature to notify users about installed apps considered dead. Dead, in this case, simply means the app has been removed from the Play Store and will no longer receive updates.
The folks at Android Authority found three different strings in the Play Store’s APK teardown, where Google changes the wording based on the number of apps removed. However, the message remains consistent: the company warns that one or more specific apps you have installed are no longer listed in the Play Store and that you should not expect future updates.
Why Dead App Warnings Could Be Useful for Android Users
This feature may not seem interesting at first, but we bet there are so many apps installed on your device that it may be difficult to notice when a specific app has been removed from the Play Store. An app may be removed from the Play Store for violating Google’s policies, or the developer may simply choose to remove it. No wonder there are several examples of abandoned Android apps that users miss. A recent example is OpenAI’s discontinuation of its video-generation app, Sora, which was previously listed on the Play Store.
You may not realize that an app is no longer available in the Play Store until you try to install it on a new device or use it, and it doesn’t work because it has been discontinued. This is where Google’s new warning about dead apps could come in handy.
As of this writing, Google already notifies you if it detects a potentially dangerous app on your phone or if an app you installed has been suspended for security violations. Since the dead app warning feature is still in development and has only been spotted in an early Play Store release, details on it are scarce at this point. That said, we don’t know when Google might finally release this feature for Android users to enjoy, or if it might ever see the light of day.
