Satellite Internet will soon be offered on more major airline flights. American Airlines upgrades more than 500 planes with Starlink Internet.
American Airlines announced today that it has leveraged Starlink’s satellite Internet service to power in-flight Wi-Fi beginning in the first quarter of 2027.
The wireless internet upgrade will affect “more than 500 narrow-body aircraft” starting early next year.
“Starlink is widely considered the world’s most advanced satellite constellation using low Earth orbit to provide high-speed Internet access capable of supporting in-flight streaming, online gaming, collaborative meeting tools, and much more,” American Airlines says. “With thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, Starlink can provide multi-gigabit connectivity to aircraft using its Aero Terminal, which can support up to 1 Gbps per antenna.”
The Starlink-powered wireless internet upgrade is planned for “more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including deliveries of the new A321XLR and A321neo.”
Starlink has a significant lead over its competitors in the satellite internet space.
Meanwhile, Amazon recently acquired Globalstar. This makes Amazon Apple’s emergency satellite service provider for iPhone and Apple Watch. Amazon’s purchase of Globalstar bolsters its growing Project Leo offerings.
