Even though some argue that having a screen protector is no longer necessary, many users still feel much better with a screen protector on their phone. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to properly install a screen protector on your phone, even when you follow all the instructions. Fortunately, cases with a built-in screen protector eliminate this frustration with a convenient form factor that serves two purposes.
All built-in screen protector cases have the same basic design. They are made up of two pieces, one to hold your phone and another with the screen cover on top. If you’re thinking about buying one, there are many different options on Amazon for all major smartphones. These five models are among the best sellers on Amazon:
Cases vary in price based on model and color, but those listed range from $16.99 for the minimalist Diaclara to $39.99 for the more rugged SUPCASE. Most cost around $24.99.
If you own an iPhone, Miracase and SUPCASE are good options because they are compatible with MagSafe accessories like chargers and power banks. The FNTCASE and SUPCASE also have a built-in kickstand, although reviews indicate that the one on the SUPCASE is much sturdier. As for the Cozycase and the Diaclara, I have personally used them both and had no issues with either. My Diaclara lasted over a year of constant use and was still in good condition when I replaced it. Between the two, however, I prefer the Cozycase for its waterproof design that provides excellent protection without seeming too sturdy.
Are smartphone cases with built-in screen protectors worth it?
You might be able to guess, but I’m definitely a pro at phone cases with built-in screen protection, having used them for over a decade on all of my iPhones. I like not having to struggle to replace my screen protector every few months and feeling like my device is better protected overall. This is especially true for waterproof cases like my current case, which I was really happy to have at the beach.
That said, some arguments can be made against them. Since they typically aren’t as tightly attached to the phone as a regular screen protector, dust can get stuck between the front of the case and the phone’s screen, which can lead to scratches. Newer smartphones are also more durable than the flimsy ones of the past, so cases and screen protectors in general are less important than they used to be.
Still, while they can survive a few drops, smartphones aren’t invincible and anything you carry around with you is constantly at risk of damage. Additionally, I’ve never seen a built-in screen protector case damage my phone itself, even when I noticed bits of dirt and dust. We should all deep clean our phones and cases more often anyway, so your device should be fine if you take good care of it. Cases with built-in screen protectors are also comparable in price to traditional cases, so it’s worth trying one out if you’re interested.
