If you think of gallon-sized jars of mayonnaise or huge bottles of olive oil when you think of Sam’s Club, you’re not alone. However, the warehouse club retailer offers many other products in its stores besides large quantities of food. There are hundreds of tech, gaming, and consumer electronics products you can buy on a budget at Sam’s Club.
However, you may be wondering if the warehouse club is the best place to buy these tech items. It can be helpful to understand some of its drawbacks before plunking down the money to become a member. Some of the biggest drawbacks to shopping for tech at Sam’s Club include limiting your choice of smartphone plan carrier to T-Mobile (unlike Costco or Best Buy, which work with multiple carriers) and not carrying Apple MacBook laptops. Sam’s Club also does not offer price comparisons with competing retailers (unlike Best Buy) and generally sells warehouse club-only TVs that have slightly different features and model numbers than similar options offered by other retailers. If any of these drawbacks directly affect how you want to purchase your tech or consumer electronics products, you may want to look at other retailers that offer different shopping options and services.
Sam’s Club only works with T-Mobile for smartphone plans
General wisdom tells you that comparing smartphone costs and usage plans from the three major carriers is a good way to save money. You might think that taking advantage of promotions available from the big three carriers (Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile) might lead to a great deal that meets your needs.
If you want to buy a smartphone and sign up for a one-step service plan at Sam’s Club, you won’t be able to leverage the big three against each other, because that only allows T-Mobile to operate inside the warehouse club. Sam’s Club began partnering solely with T-Mobile in 2024 to offer deals and bundles on smartphones and in-store subscription plans. Previously, Sam’s Club allowed AT&T to operate inside the warehouse.
If you want more choices, one of the benefits of buying a new phone at Costco is that you can choose from plans and offers from AT&T or T-Mobile. Best Buy also offers options from several of the major carriers, as it gives customers the option to purchase hardware and subscription plans from Verizon or AT&T.
If you want an Apple MacBook, avoid the Sam’s Club membership
It’s not uncommon for people to be loyal to a brand when purchasing IT products. Apple consistently ranks among the most popular brands in terms of consumer loyalty. For Apple fans, buying a laptop other than a MacBook would seem unusual, because the MacBook easily works with other Apple products they already own, like an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Sam’s Club offers many types of computers and related products, including laptops, gaming monitors, and desktops. Sam’s Club also sells many types of Apple-branded products, including iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches. However, it doesn’t sell Apple MacBook laptops, which frustrates some customers.
If you want MacBooks, you can find them at many electronics retailers, both in-store and online. Amazon, the Apple Store, Best Buy, and B&H Photo Video all have MacBooks for sale. However, if you want to take advantage of warehouse club prices, Costco has MacBook laptops for sale, including several different models and screen size options. If you want to trade in an old MacBook or other Apple device, Costco pays members for trade-ins through its website.
If you find a deal elsewhere, don’t ask about price matching.
If you’re a shopaholic, one of your favorite activities might be searching for and finding great deals. You could then try to convince a local retailer to match the price you found elsewhere, which will help you save money. When shopping for tech and consumer electronics products, which tend to have a higher upfront cost, you can potentially save a lot of money by taking the time to request a price match from your favorite retailer.
If you like the thrill of price matching, you’ll want to avoid even asking at Sam’s Club. The warehouse club retailer does not match the prices you find at competing retailers. Individual Sam’s stores may choose to match prices you find at other Sam’s Club stores, but parent company Sam’s Club does not have a policy that requires a store to match prices found at other retailers.
On the other hand, Best Buy clearly touts its “Best Price Guarantee” for both online and in-store purchases of eligible competing products. B&H Photo Video and OfficeMax also both offer limited pricing compared to major competitors on technology products.
TV models at Sam’s may not match those at other retailers
When you’re deciding which TV you want to buy, you can compare prices from several different retailers to find the best deal. You might consider TVs with the same screen size, model year, and manufacturer.
However, if you’re including Sam’s Club in your price comparisons, you need to take a closer look at each TV’s actual model number. It’s common for warehouse clubs (like Sam’s Club and Costco) to offer TVs that are nearly identical to popular electronics retailers, but the model numbers are often one letter or number different. These TVs may have similar performance and have similar prices. However, features and add-ons may be different, such as an upgraded audio system or a longer warranty period.
Sam’s Club can promise to purchase some of these unique designs in bulk, justifying the manufacturer’s addition of an extra feature. Ultimately, you need to spend a little extra time reviewing the specifications and features of each Sam’s Club TV model to be sure you’re receiving exactly what you want at the price you want.
Sam’s Club cannot repair electronic products you purchase there
Many consumers may not consider themselves tech-savvy, which means they’ll likely rely more on tech support and technicians to help them with tricky repairs or installations. If you’re familiar with Best Buy’s on-site troubleshooting, technical help, and setup services through Geek Squad, you can naturally expect most retailers offering consumer electronics to offer similar services.
You can sometimes purchase installation services for consumer technology products through a separate third-party professional when shopping at Sam’s, but this service is more common for appliances or televisions. You may also be able to add a technical support plan from Allstate that includes repair options with certain TV, tablet or computer purchases.
However, you can’t take your product to Sam’s for convenient repairs like you can at Best Buy with Geek Squad. This could pose a barrier for consumers wanting easy access to repairs and service for their electronic devices.
